63 - indigo skies just before dawn

"Do you see that, Mamiya?"

Thirsty, starving souls look out toward the pale sky. Yumehisa expects to see black crows soaring overhead, but instead he finds a wide expanse of cotton candy pinks and blues. Not a cloud in sight.

"What am I looking at?" he asks.

Natsume seems confused by the question. He laughs softly. The innocence of that smile lives at odds with the tense, tight grip he has on Mamiya's arm.

"The sky, I'm talking about the sky!" Natsume exclaims.

Yumehisa's shoe sinks into the desert sand, sluggish, and he yawns.

"What about it?"

"Isn't it beautiful? It's almost sunrise... I wish I could show this view to him."

The story's heartbeat slows, and he raises his chin to admire the approaching light of dawn.

If that's what Natsume wants, then he'll memorize this view. He'll recite its description from memory for the rest of time, and if he repeats it enough times, maybe it'll fall into the story, where Suou Keito can enjoy it too.
